Chevak Artisans

Chevak has a long history of producing artwork.  The Elders traditionally sewed skins, made clothing, baskets, masks and ivory tools.  Dolls were originally made to be played with, then in the 1940s or 50s, dolls began to be made for sale.  Some of the doll makers have been sewing since they were small children.  Chevak is particularly famous for its doll-making, masks and baskets.
Chevak artwork is well known throughout the state and also throughout the world.  Some of the local artists have their work on display in museums such as the Fairbanks Museum,  Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Smithsonian Institute. Rosalie Paniyak, a well known Chevak doll maker gave a Statue of Liberty doll to George W. Bush Snr.
